David lives in Mt. Pleasant with his wife and two children. He began playing drums at age 9, at the height of the British Invasion, on his older brother's set. By age 16, he'd played several gigs with Charleston rock band Free Mountain Standstill as a substitute drummer. He later founded the Solid Gold Show Band that specialized in 50's and 60's rock n roll with three older musicians. He retired from music at age 21 to participate in drag racing. His team, with the late Gary Clark driving, won the Southeast Championship in 1980 (NHRA Pro Comp) and placed 5th in the nation in 1981 (NHRA Alcohol Funny Car). Power lifting was David's next, and cheaper, area of interest. He set a SC Bench Press record (American Drug Free Power lifting Association) of 500 lbs in 1991 in the 275 lb weight class. David came out of drum retirement at age 40, playing a few gigs with Chuck Bigbee, Everette's brother, in late 1996. He did some substitute drumming for the young funk rock band Otis Fairweather and with Everette Bigbee's band, Monster. David's favorite bands include Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Cactus, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, and Santana and has been most influenced by drummers Billy Cobham, Carmine Appice, Carl Palmer, Alan White, Simon Phillips, Michael Walden, and John Bonham. After seeing Appice with Cactus in October 1971, he came home and put two drum kits together; he has used a similar set-up ever since.
